Some non-traditional Hong Kong street food

Hong Kong being an international society, there are plenty of international food. But not only at restaurant, street food too. Lets take a look on the growing number of non-traditional Hong Kong street food along the Jordan Temple Street.

At first is this Pattaya BBQ, where you can find many such BBQ stalls around many part of Hong Kongs.

And the more and more popular coconut milk 椰清,椰汁. Not in this photo, usually you can see a long queue for it.

But still, my favourite drink is still 杨汁甘露, I get it at HKD 12 at 大良八记。

I love Hong Kong street food.

A great steak at traditional chinese restaurant

Want to have good quality steak, not necessary at high class western restaurant. This traditional chinese restaurant at Jordan 山林道, called Golden Phoenix Grill Restaurant 金凤大餐厅, has over 30 years of experience in making steak. You will find it full house during Christmas Eve or Valentine. And how to order, just order the two that is most expensive one, around HKD $110 or $120. Forget those HKD $60 dollar one on hot plate. Those expensive one serve on glass plate, and the taste really good. But the house wine, so so, so forget the drink.

And you know how delicious it is? I forget to take photo to show you even I been there twice.

Dining with Stars - Hong Kong Finest Cuisines 香 港 顶 级 餐 馆

Want to know where is the finest cuisines in Hong Kong, be it Chinese, Asia, European or International. Again, the Hong Kong tourism board come out with this website Dinning with Stars, to tell you what are the top food in Hong Kong.

To be frank, I doubt I try any of them. Many of them are high class restaurant in the hotel.

Hong Kong "home made" noddles, best for gift

Coming to Hong Kong and not sure what to buy for family? Here is one good choice, a "home made" noddles with no color and no preservation. It is a brand with over 50 years, and when you try the noddles, you know it is very different from those you eat outside. Somemore it has a good packaging, so is the best for gift.

Want to read more information, and want to know what are the selections available? Click to enlarge the boucher below.

It makes me hungry now.

"Five Green" 五青 - a powerful fruit juices for all your problems

At Hong Kong, you can easily find a fruit juice stalls selling you fresh fruit juice without adding sugar. Usually they will also provide a table tell you whic juice is best for your problem, one example is shown here.

You free stress? Sleepless at night? Want to reduce weight? Sore throat? They got all the recipe.
One is the "Five Green" 五青 (芹菜,青瓜,青椒,苦瓜,青苹果), very powerful, can nearly solve any problem. No harm try it out yourself.

I am trying one "Five Green" now...

芹菜 and 青椒 almost dominate the taste. No harm trying, good for body.

Jordan Curry House 佐敦咖喱 *not so good*

There are some very traditional Indian food at Hong Kong. Most of them at the Tsim Sha Tshui 尖沙嘴 Chungking Mansion 重慶大厦, which I will tell you which one are good later on. But I want to talk about this Jordan Curry House 佐敦咖喱 at Jordan 佐敦.

I order a set dinner, which comes with the BBQ chicken (this one taste good):

I ordered vegetable 咖喱角 as well. Not bad:

But when comes to curry, it is so terrible... I feel like drinking water....

Though the beef are soft. So to eat curry, I strongly recommend you go to Chungking Mansion 重慶大厦, or if you want to eat at Jordan curry, don't order the set, because the curry taste really not so strong.

Thai food 黄珍珍 at Jordan

Though this restaurant has a good location with nice decoration. But I think the food doesn't not worth the value. The taste is normal, and most disappointing is the "durian friend rice", basically just fried rice, no durian at all, don't even a smell. The other food, also normal. Just feel like normal chinese cooking, nothing special of thai.

To me, it doesn't worth the value. So ..........

The Hong Kong famous street food / snack - 鸡蛋仔

Those who been to Hong Kong, should know Hong Kong got many street food / snack. I have showed you some previously. here is another one, called 鸡蛋仔. And in fact, this is also avialable at many other asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia. But what is so special about Hong Kong one? According to one expert, a good 鸡蛋仔, besides taste is good, it must be:

1) half fill half empty
2) outside crispy soft inside
3) not too sweet

And there is one, a famous one, you see long queue everday at any hour, along the Nathan road, near to Jordan MTR, before the Macdonal, opposite the Tsim Sha Tsui police station. You will see this:

The poster from the signboard all the way to the ceiling....

A permenant sigh saying there will be many people, so please queue...

These are the equipments, do they clean? I not sure:

Here you are....

Frankly speaking, I like those with some favour like red bean inside.

Traditional Korean Restaurant - 韓國錦城飯店

This is the famous traditiona Korean Restaurant at Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong: 韓國錦城飯店 傳統韓式料理. The shop itself, I mean the front door doesn't looked fancy but the food is nice and very traditional, as it run by Korean. And remember be there earlier, if not you got to wait for find something else to eat. They don't accept reservation if less than 5 persons.

This is the second floor of the restaurant, as you can see, it is not that bad, 4 more tables of 4 persons behind me. So maybe 10 tables in total at the 2nd floor. First small is even smaller.

Look at these Korean speaking uncles, then you can rest assure that the food is very traditional and taste good.

One famous dishes, besides BBQ, egg fried fish / beef. 蛋包鱼/牛。

Here is the address and contact information:

详细地址:香港九龙尖沙咀堪富利士道5号 Humphreys Ave (尖沙咀港鐵站A2出口)
订座电话:00852-23118636

And the price is affordable and reasonble (that means not expensive, anyone should be able to afford)

Best Dessert in Hong Kong - Chung Kee 松记糖水 (Menu attached)

Hong Kong of course famous for its dessert, but most people just know about the 許留山 Hui Lau Shan or the 大良八記, as they have more branches across the tourist attractions. But which one is the Hong Kong local people favourite? Today I am going to show you one call 松记糖水 Chung Kee. This brand they target mostly local people, as they got only 3 branches in Hong Kong. The one closest to the tourist attractions is the one near Yau Ma Ti or Jordan or Temple Street.

Why I say it is famous for local people, take a look at the queue:

Besides the taste is good, most important it has plenty of varieties (look at the menu below, click to enlarge). No matter what you want, they will have it, and they may give you something that you never think of or try before.

They do delivery also (the number if on the menu). So you can skip the queue and enjoy dessert in your home or hotel. So you may wonder, why 松记 got so much choices compared with 許留山 or 大良八記. This is because 許留山 they have a standard procedure of processing the food, just like Macdonal, they got to train the staffs and follow the known procedures, so they can't have much variety. As for 大良八記 they have a center kitchen that prepare all the dessert and then redistribute to all the shops, so they can't have too much variety too.

Traditional Hong Kong 汤圆:真正宁波汤圆

Today is 冬至, so lets take a look at the traditional Hong Kong 汤圆 - 真正宁波汤圆, you can easily get them in the market, boil the water or soup, and cook them and ready to eat. They are in a box of two dozens, 24 small balls, and selling at around HKD 20. Of course they got a variety of taste too, like seasame 芝麻, 豆沙 etc...

Hong Kong, to some extend, still keep some very traditional culcuture and food.

Noddles below HKD 16 (that is less than USD 2)

Though the rental in Hong Kong is expensive, there are still some food at a very affordable price. Such as these listed below. I will first started with three noddles that cost you less than HKD 16 (that is less than USD 2). They from the Kowloon side to Hong Kong Island, basically you can find them everywhere. And most important, don't think that these food are cheap and not delicious, basically they are as tasty as those "famous" one or those over HKD 26 with the same portion.

1) Jordan, 鲮鱼球面

2) Sham Shui Po 深水埗, 牛腩面
3) Near Causewaybay, 云南米线 with 牛丸
Of course there are much more. And usually those shops will have plenty of noddles for your selection.

Sha Tin new egg tart shop - long queue everday 泰昌蛋挞 沙田分店

Egg tart is famous in Hong Kong and Macau (I prefer the Macau one, their skin is crispy). But for Hong Kong egg tart, the famous one of course is 泰昌. Take a look at their new shop at Sha Tin 沙田, got 80% opening discount, daily you can see long queue of people waiting for the hot hot egg tart 蛋挞.

The shops is outside the big shopping mall New Town Plaza. And also New Town Plaza is a great shopping place that is not so known to the tourist, but I strongly toursit pay a visit there. It worth the trip, also you can visit the Culture Museum that is nearby.

I feel like to have one now. Maybe two is enough.

My delicious and cheap food at Shenzhen 深圳

Remember my last trip to Shenzhen 深圳? The food there is so nice and so cheap. Imagine a big bottle of beer only RMB 5. And see what I order, one Gu Ru Rou 咕噜肉, and one BBQ oxyster 炭烧生蚝, so fresh and so delicious. Yummy and taste great. Of course, I wont forget the vegetable, though the way of cooking is kind of special, with the ginger and 皮蛋, but it tastes good too.

Overall, less than RMB 100, what can you expect? Cheap and good food. Where to eat? See the address in my previous post: Tips + day trip itinerary for ShenZhen 深圳

Hong Kong Famous: Gong Ho 公和豆浆

This is the famous Gong Ho 公和豆浆, you can easily find a branch of it somewhere in Hong Kong. What is special is that every 公和 restaurant will have different style, different menu, different food. But they all related to 豆腐 Tau Fu or 豆花豆浆 Soy Milk. So take a look at this 红豆豆花爽, which is available at Tsim Sha Tsui branch, it is a kind of jelly, so different from the normal 豆花.

Attached is a map for that restaurant. However, the set meal doesn't taste special.

香港仔鱼蛋粉 - a decent meal with limited budget

香港仔鱼蛋粉 is a restaurant with several branches across Hong Kong. It is one of the successful traditional Hong Kong Restaurant 茶餐厅 be operated across so many areas. One very basic reason is the food quality and the price. They have over 20 if not 40 types of food for you to select, and price is very reasonable, e.g. the 南乳猪手饭 shown in the figures below, only cost you about HKD 27, this price is hard to find else where. In addition, it doesn't taste bad, but unfortunately, I believe a lot of 味精 is inside, so that it tastes good.

Anyway, if you are hungry and limited buget, this restaurant is a good choice.

Lousy food in Hong Kong - How to Avoid

All food in Hong Kong are nice? Of course not, in fact, MANY are not nice. Some are too salty, some are too oily, some added to much 味精。So how to filter those terrible food? After tried a few, here got a few tips to share with you.

1) Avoid those shops with very limited customers. Since no one is supporting them, must be some problem, only enter those with a lot of customers, need to wait for seats. One bad example is shown below:

2) Avoid those has limited seat. You think they only serve take away? Of course not, very likely their food is bad. Take a look at this 卤水鹅,just the skin and bone.

3) Avoid those targeting tourists. They have fancy outlook, the menu in many languages, in English, Japanese, etc... very likely they are targetting foreigners, or tourists. They are expensive, and not so nice food. One example is below. So only enter those with a lot of local people.

Will update whenever got more examples.
